tuesday cocktail break

This is a Manhattan-gone-Hawaiian, a Manhattan with just a little more love to offer. A good nightcap and cold weather drink, this is best dared ordered at bars featuring grandpas, swing dancers, or fireplaces.

Old Fashioned

3 oz. bourbon*
1 maraschino cherry
1 sugar cubes
1 orange slice
3 dashes bitters
1 Tb. water

To serve on ice: In a rocks glass, muddle together the cherry, orange slice, bitters, sugar cube and scant water. Add ice and bourbon, give it a swirl.

To serve ‘up’: In a shaker, muddle together ingredients as above. Add ice and bourbon. Shake it all up and strain into a martini glass (straining out the ‘mash’). Add a cherry if you like
— it looks good in the glass.

Most places won’t have an orange slice at the bar; in this case, use a lemon slice and a splash of triple sec. Unlike another muddled fave, the mojito, you can count on the ingredients being on hand for this one.

* Recommended: Maker’s Mark, Booker’s. (I was once served this by accident with J䧥rmeister — and it was not gross.)
